AF INDUSTRY: The Use of Artificial Intelligence in Documentary Film

60 min.

Peter Harum explores the use of AI in documentary film—its creative potential and ethical challenges. Through real examples, he examines how AI reshapes storytelling, authenticity, and the filmmaker’s role.

Artificial intelligence is transforming traditional creative processes and challenging the very nature of creativity, originality, and authorship in cinema. For documentary filmmaking—long associated with truth and authenticity—the integration of AI presents a unique challenge: how to harness its potential while maintaining ethical responsibility and integrity in the portrayal of reality.

For filmmakers, this means adapting to new technologies while consciously shaping their attitudes toward them, with a focus on protecting human input and addressing specific ethical issues that AI introduces into the creative process. Through concrete examples from practice, this masterclass will explore both the opportunities and pitfalls that collaboration with AI can bring to documentary work.

Peter Harum studied film editing at the Academy of Performing Arts (VŠMU) in Bratislava. He works as a film and television editor on award-winning documentaries and feature films. He has taught at VŠMU and Pan-European University (PEVŠ), and is currently a doctoral student at the Faculty of Dramatic Arts at the Academy of Arts. Harum is a board member of the Slovak Association of Film Editors, a member of the Slovak Film and Television Academy, and serves on expert commissions of the Slovak Audiovisual Fund.

Among his recent works are Countdown: The Last Film of Ivan Palúch (dir. Martin Palúch), ±90 (dir. Marek Kuboš), Turnus (dir. Jaro Vojtek), The Happy Man (dir. Soňa G. Lutherová), and Operation Monaco (dir. Dušan Trančík).
