AF INDUSTRY: A discussion on publishing film literature in Slovakia
Writing About Film
How do we think about film today? How can we write about audiovisual culture now? For whom? On the internet and increasingly with the help of artificial intelligence, limitations seem to be disappearing. Yet thinking about film, knowing not only local but also world cinema, being aware of historical contexts and the complexity of current trends is far from easy.
The Slovak Film Institute, the only state institution that preserves, studies, and makes accessible Slovakia’s cinematographic heritage—and regularly presents it at the Art Film IFF—is also the main publisher and guarantor of expert film literature in Slovakia, both translated and original works by Slovak authors. Its focus is understandably on books about the history of Slovak film culture, but it also supports the popularization of thinking about film.
Peter Dubecký (Director of the Slovak Film Institute), together with Mária Ferenčuhová, Peter Michalovič, and Martin Kaňuch, who contribute to shaping the SFÚ’s publishing activities, will discuss specific publications, research possibilities in Slovak cinema, and the editorial profile of the SFÚ.
