Vahid, a former political prisoner now working as a car mechanic, is haunted by his past. One evening, a man enters his workshop – the distinct sound of his prosthetic leg stirs a chilling memory. Convinced this is the man who once tortured him, Vahid kidnaps him and sets out to bury him alive in the desert. But as doubts about the man’s identity grow, Vahid joins forces with other survivors to decide the fate of the person they believe to be their tormentor. This gripping film delves deep into the moral minefields of revenge, justice, and forgiveness in a society shaped by repression. Director Jafar Panahi, himself repeatedly imprisoned in Iran, shot the film in secret, without government approval. While confronting the traumas of political dissidents and regime opponents, Panahi weaves in compassion, biting satire, and dark humour, crafting a bold critique of a system that silences dissent.
The film won the Palme d'Or at this year's Cannes Film Festival.
