The dramatic story of a major figure of Czechoslovak history – Jan Masaryk, the diplomat and later Minister of Foreign Affairs who had to grapple with the tumultuous events surrounding the infamous Munich Agreement, or “Munich Betrayal”, as it is often called in these parts. Against the backdrop of a Europe in disarray, at the dawn of WWII, the film follows the life of this bohemian lover of women, music, grand gestures and contests. As a diplomat in Britain, he struggled internally with the freespirited artist in him on one hand and the morally responsible clerk and career diplomat on the other. His story gradually unfolds before us, hinging upon the weight of his responsibilities and the expectations of others. A man who could never escape his father’s shadow, Masaryk seeks an escape from his own name, from accountability and from himself in a rip-roaring life of drugs and alcohol, as well as in self-torment during his doomed struggle for his country’s future. Masaryk won 12 Czech Lions and eight Sun in a Net Awards.
