In a godforsaken Kazakh village in the mid-1990s, four youths struggle to find their place in the world. Zharas worries about his father, who can’t find a job after being released from prison. To help his family make ends meet, he works on and off for a grain merchant. Balapan sings exquisitely, but his schoolmates’ provocations prompt him to favour his fists over his voice. Zhaba combs the nearby ruins for scrap metal to sell. There he discovers three neglected boys living in an abandoned tunnel. Aslan is preparing to study medicine, but when he learns that his girlfriend has to have an abortion, he changes completely. In his second film, this Blue Angel laureate (Art Film Fest 2013) conveys the frame of mind of teenagers growing up in a time of complex changes. The Wounded Angel is the second in a visually captivating trilogy about young people and their complicated relationships in a world without moral standards.
