Shot on and off from 2002 to 2015, this film by world-renowned French photographer Christophe Agou, living in New York at the time, is a gritty, nostalgic and surprisingly funny documentary. It was shot in Massif Central, a beautiful yet somehow godforsaken mountainous region of southern France, barely touched by civilization. Aesthetically beautiful as well as emotionally powerful, this portrait of the region’s elderly inhabitants develops into a broader, metaphorical portrait of the countryside and of love for one’s land. The story of going away and old age is sadly beautiful, characteristic of the conflict between nature and society, or tradition and modernity. Agou finished filming in 2015; after his death, his colleagues completed the postproduction. No Farewells was premiered at Cannes 2017.
