Lara is a customs agent at Iceland’s Keflavík Airport. Struggling with incessant financial and personal problems, she does her best to be a caring mother to her son Eldar. One day she is handed a suspicious passport by Adja, a migrant from Guinea-Bissau, Africa, who is subsequently detained. Hours turn into days, and Adja’s fate is uncertain. But in the small town, the women’s paths continue to cross. Despite resentment, cultural differences and unclear life goals, an unusual bond forms between the two, and Lara is forced to take a crucial decision. The story is told without sentimentality or ill will, instead reflecting on the local social impacts of the refugee crisis, which by all appearances has yet to reach Iceland. In its detailed depiction of social reality, the film is reminiscent of the work of Ken Loach and the Dardenne brothers.
