In the 1960s, the small, provincial, shoe-factory town of Martfű is terrorized by a series of murders of young women. The hunt for the killer turns into an obsession, spurred by the hysterical pressure of state officials. But as the spectre of justice fades, guilt and innocence are just a matter of opinion, and we are drawn ever deeper into an intricate drama set in the claustrophobic milieu of communist Hungary, coming to terms with the aftermath of the tragic year 1956, when the revolution was suppressed by Soviet forces. The new regime is in need of more than just a demonstration of power. In these circumstances, the actual enforcement of law and order has political implications, plunging the investigators into a nightmare. Strangled is a work of fiction based on real events, a political, social and psychological thriller that knows no bounds in its depiction of criminality. The film won nine national Hungarian film prizes, including Best Film, Director and Cinematographer.
