This romantic drama, based on Bernhard Schlink’s bestseller of the same name, begins in post-war Berlin. 15-year-old Michael Berg falls ill on the way to school, and a stranger, 30-year-old Hanna, helps him. When he recovers, he finds her and thanks her, sparking a passionate but secret love affair, with Hanna often asking Michael to read aloud to her. Despite their intense feelings for each other, one day Hanna mysteriously disappears. Eight years later, Michael, now a law student, is observing war-crime trials, and he meets his lover anew under completely different circumstances: in the dock as a suspect. As he learns about her past, he discovers a secret that will change their lives completely. The Reader is a chilling tale of truth, forgiveness and a generation’s coming to terms with the crimes of their elders. Kate Winslet’s performance earned her an Oscar and a BAFTA Award for Best Leading Actress, as well as a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress; the film received four additional Oscar nominations (Best Film, Director, Adapted Screenplay and Cinematography).
