Transgender Marina is a waitress and an aspiring singer. She and her lover Orlando, 20 years her senior, are planning a future together. But when Orlando suddenly dies, Marina is forced to confront psychological and physical pressure from his family, social exclusion and personal humiliation. Despite all the obstacles and adversity, she continues to fight for her rights, tries to live with freedom and dignity, while showing those around her what she really is: a complicated, strong, upright, fantastic woman. The latest picture from director Sebastián Lelio is an original, genre-transcending, emancipatory challenge to societal stereotypes, drawing equal inspiration from Alfred Hitchcock and Pedro Almodóvar. The auteur’s sensual, biting commentary on the cruelty of discrimination, which so often targets the most vulnerable, is grounded in the interplay between naturalistic and subtly magical-realist modes, and above all in the outstanding musical performance of actress Daniela Vega.
