The third feature by French director Léa Mysius is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Laurent Mauvignier, and also her first film selected for the main competition of the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, where it competed for the Palme d’Or.

Nora, Thomas, and their daughter Ida live on a remote farm in the middle of the French marshlands. Their only neighbour is Cristina, an Italian painter played by Monica Bellucci. During preparations for Nora’s birthday celebration, three uninvited men appear on the property. What begins as an apparently harmless family gathering slowly turns into a tense thriller in which long-buried secrets surface and a past the characters tried to escape finally catches up with them.

Mysius uses the home-invasion thriller framework to explore themes of identity, guilt, and the possibility of starting over. The isolated farm becomes a psychological trap in which each character is gradually forced to confront their own lies. Rather than focusing on action, she builds tension through atmosphere, uncertainty, and the slow revelation of hidden relationships. The birthday party thus becomes a metaphor for the moment when a carefully constructed illusion of family stability collapses and truth begins to emerge.
