Grease, starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, was released in the late 1970s, triggering an endless series of mostly unsuccessful disco film spinoffs worldwide. None of them, however, managed to outdo this lodestar film. Grease overflows with incredible energy, grounded in its equilibrium between choreography and music. The film is no worse for the wear today, thanks to it not taking itself seriously, but rather being a fanciful, idealized vision of the 1950s. It can be enjoyed as a lightly entertaining, action-packed musical on the one hand, and as a fun, gag-filled blast from the past on the other. “Grease is an example of how the 1970s ushered in a new era of American musicals. A charming homage to the 1950s.” Milan Lasica The film was nominated for four Golden Globes – Best Comedy or Musical, Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical (John Travolta), Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical (Olivia Newton-John) and Best Original Song (Grease and You're the One That I Want) – as well as an Oscar for the song Hopelessly Devoted to You.
