A recovering junkie, an ex-convict and a masked former wrestler walk into a taqueria… That’s more or less the setup for Ryan Prows’s bloody, violent, bizarre and very, very funny debut Lowlife, depicting a single eventful day from the perspectives of several unsavoury characters. Chief among them is El Monstruo, the latest in a long line of wrestler folk heroes. He considers himself a highminded outlaw swallowed up by the underworld, believing that one day he’ll return as a hero. He works for his stepfather, the merciless gangster Teddy. Kidnapping, rape, drugs and murder are their stock in trade. But their latest gig doesn’t quite go as planned. Described by one critic as “Pulp Fiction for the Trump era”, Lowlife is an outstanding cross-genre black comedy with fantastic performances where you’ll learn, among other things, what to do if you leave prison with a swastika tattooed across your entire face.
