1990s, Banpo Town, rural China. A woman’s body is found by the river. Ma Zhe, Chief of the Criminal Police, heads up the murder investigation that quickly leads to an obvious arrest. As his superiors are keen to communicate their success, several clues push Ma Zhe to delve deeper into the hidden behavior of his fellow citizens. With a singular and acerbic vision, Wei Shujun plays with the detective genre. The film was shot entirely on 16mm film, which gives its image a dark and interesting color, setting the action in an indeterminate time period. Only the River Flows was premiered in the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival in 2023 and has also become one of the most viewed independent films in China.
