This episode from the six-part television series Constructing Slovakia paints a documentary portrait of a place that bore witness to the expansion of industry and the making of Slovakia’s history: Bratislava’s Winter Harbour. This now-abandoned industrial site and monument serves as a stage for an alternative view of Central European history and identity. It is also the key to a critical exploration of the past, emerging from archive footage and organically connecting with retold human stories from the past and present. With the arms of enormous cranes looming over them, two photographers explore the old port, collecting images as well as memories and bits of nautical history. The banks of the Danube, full of poetic nostalgia, alternate with tales of the impassable, barbed-wire-festooned border of Socialism, the “security measure” that stood above human life.
