This intimate, black-and-white film from director Emily Atef captures legendary actress Romy Schneider’s three-day stay at a French rehabilitation centre, where in 1981 she gave her last interview for the reputable German magazine Stern. Accompanied by her best friend, she bares her soul to the journalist and photographer without grasping the consequences of her openness and spontaneous honesty. But this dynamic, yet understated chamber drama is more than the story of a film icon who, despite her successful career, faced serious personal issues. At another level it speaks to the blatant thoughtlessness of the media, which cynically feed off of the star actress’s suffering with a single goal in mind: selling the intimate details of a celebrity’s life to the tabloids. Exceptionally shot and masterfully directed, the film is nonetheless dominated by the compelling lead performance of German actress Marie Bäumer.
