Kevin, Sammie and John. Three boys, all around 17, returning to reality, home, to aunts, to foster families. Fresh from young offender institutions, the boys have mended their ways – says social services. But there’s no happy ending in sight. The boys lack morals, and no wonder, since they’re in short supply in their surroundings. The morbid, hopeless story leads toward a tragic end. The depressing reality the characters find themselves in is enhanced by paradocumentary techniques, creating an atmosphere of dread. The film is shot in various formats, using various technologies, building an oppressive tension from the very first shot. Word to the wise: this is no teenage comedy. It’s a brilliantly shot piece of filmmaking, inspired by Haneke’s earlier work, a brutal rendition of Crime and Punishment set in 2016 and based on actual events.
