Set in the interior of German East Africa at the beginning of WWI, The African Queen tells of the adventures had by Canadian adventurer Allnutt and English missionary Rosie as they escape German soldiers on a little steamboat. As they make for British territory, a whole range of obstacles stands in their way. Bogart’s portrayal of hard-drinking trader Charlie Allnut earned him an Oscar. Opposite Bogart, Katharine Hepburn puts in a brilliant performance as a prim missionary with no choice but to accompany Allnut on his boat The African Queen. Stuck together for the entirety of the dangerous passage, the two gradually learn a great deal about each other. “The African Queen – a tour-de-force tandem performance from two great movie stars: Katharine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart, with director John Huston at the helm.”– Milan Lasica
