Kind-hearted 60-something Doris Miller works as an accountant in Manhattan. She’s spent her life caring for her infirm mother, whose death leaves her searching for a new purpose. She finds it in her new colleague, 30-something John Fremont, a typical New York hipster. Doris wants to win him over, and thanks to a few well-timed little lies, she succeeds. When she starts appearing with John at hip parties, her life takes some exciting turns. Hooked on experiences and feelings she missed out on in her youth, she throws caution to the wind and decides to follow her heart for the first time. While the premise may sound tacky on paper, thanks to convincing directing and a surprisingly honest screenplay the result is a light, breezy, funny and sometimes touching study of two characters. But it’s Sally Field who steals the show from start to finish – she’s convincing and funny, displaying an unbelievable ability to transform every awkward moment into comedy gold. This is a lovely, sincere, deeply human comedy for adult viewers of all ages.
