Bradley (Vince Vaughn) has just been sacked and is going through a marital crisis. In an attempt to overcome this adversity, he starts a new career as a drug courier. But when a botched job earns him a oneway ticket to prison, he is forced, video-game-like, to face increasingly difficult challenges and decisions in order to protect his family. Bradley is mired in a whirlpool, and the only way out is down, into the deepest, most violent hell imaginable – the notorious Cell Block 99. Director/screenwriter S. Craig Zahler delivers a cold-blooded offering to the grindhouse subgenre. The precise ratcheting of suspense, culminating in a pulpy finale, is accompanied by a central plotline that will please anyone who appreciates an original vision of the underworld. At the same time, former comedy actor Vince Vaughn reinvents himself in this role of a lifetime.
