1944. Just a few months have elapsed since the brutal suppression of the Slovak National Uprising. The insurgents have retreated to the mountains, persisting in their guerrilla warfare. In the small Slovak town, residents live in constant fear of Nazi reprisals due to rumors of partisan presence in the area. The Kubiš family gathers around the table on Christmas Eve, a time usually associated with peace and serenity. Among them are the parents and their children. The son leads the local guard, while the daughter flirts with a Nazi major living with them, and her husband remains aloof. Suddenly, the tranquil Christmas atmosphere is disrupted by the arrival of the youngest son, Ďurko, a wounded partisan on the run.
