When a four-year-old girl accompanies her half-blind and stubborn elderly neighbour on an errand to buy a bag of rice, their seemingly ordinary outing becomes a soul stirring journey through the streets of Tehran’s south side. Faced with unexpected challenges, they have no choice but to rely on the kindness of random strangers. A remarkable film from the imagination of Iranian filmmaker Mohammad-Ali Talebi, Bag of Rice evokes the work of such masters as Abbás Kiarostamí; it is a consummate example of cinematic craftsmanship and a lovely, one-of-a-kind film. Premiered at the Berlinale in the children’s film competition Kinderfilmfest/14plus, it was subsequently selected for competitions at other festivals around the world.
