Petrunya is a 31-year-old history graduate, searching for work to no avail. One wintry day, on her way back from another unsuccessful interview, she leaps into the ice-cold river. This is no desperate suicide attempt – it’s Epiphany, and just like every other year, the priest tosses a consecrated cross into the frigid waters and young men compete to fish it out. Petrunya beats them all to it, holding her trophy high before the television cameras. But her post-victory glow doesn’t last long. The very next day, she is targeted by threats and hatred, having dared to violate the age-old rules of the male domain. This angry yet melancholy satire questions the state of democratic changes in Macedonian society and levels a scathing critique of the church, the judiciary and the media. At the same time, it expresses sympathy towards its tenacious heroine, who stands up to archaic traditions and paralyzing opportunism.
