This feature-length documentary comedy boasts loads of choice footage from now-classic Hollywood genre blockbusters. Who were the Czechoslovak video kings? Their reign began deep in the Communist era and lasted nearly until the turn of the 21st century. The film chronicles their illegal DIY practices of importing, copying and distributing Western films during Czechoslovakia’s normalization era. The video kings’ royal court also included so-called “turbo-dubbers”, utterly devoted to their craft, resorting to makeshift means and sacrificing their personal lives to spread the “subversive” messages contained within the cult classics of international cinema. In the process, many of the video kings made a fortune, while others were completely forgotten. Through a collage of memories, this film allows those who experienced the phenomenon first-hand to testify to an era when the voices of turbo-dubbing heralds sounded from VHS cassettes, all so that Slovaks and Czechs could have a taste of forbidden cinematic fruit.
