In the revolutionary year of 1848, aristocrat Ernő Blaskovich (Ervin Nagy) lost everything. His sole remaining asset is a racehorse named Kincsem, who has managed to restore not only his owner’s reputation, but refill his bank account as well, attaining stardom. In late-19th-century Europe, he was a household name, a darling of Emperor Franz Joseph. In 1879 he retired with a perfect record, having never lost a single race, and one of Budapest’s racetracks bears his name to this day. Ernő’s adversary is Otto von Oettingen (Tibor Gáspár), an Austrian army officer who snaps up Ernő’s family estate for his services to the Emperor; his queen of hearts is von Oettingen’s courageous, free-thinking daughter Klara (Andrea Petrik). The highest-budget Hungarian film to date, Kincsem – Bet on Revenge takes audiences on a tour of Budapest’s high society, revelling in the beauty of lives lived to their fullest and the excitement of the racetrack.
