Adam Krajňák, family man and head of an organized-crime ring along the Slovak-Ukrainian border, has a lot on his plate – his oldest daughter is marrying Ivor, a local petty thief; his Ukrainian partner Jona is beginning to rebel; and new wares have hit the smuggling market: narcotics. Set in the heart of the Slovak-Ukrainian borderlands, where cultures, languages and human lives intersect, crime thriller The Line is among the most attended and awarded Slovak films of this year – and last. At its 2017 world premiere at Karlovy Vary, director Peter Bebjak came away with the Crystal Globe for Best Director. A record of nearly 330,000 cinemagoers turned out to see the film, which became Slovakia’s national Oscar nominee and recipient of 13 nominations for the national Sun in a Net film awards, six of which it won along with other awards at home and abroad.
