On the easternmost tip of the Russian tundra, the Chukchi Peninsula, teenager Leshka leads a routine, monotonous life in a poor community of whale hunters. His home is only 86 km from Alaska, the mythical world of America, the focus of his longing eastward gaze. He ardently dreams of meeting an erotic webcam model who he unsuccessfully tries to communicate with. And so he decides to make his dream a reality and set off for America. His arduous odyssey is a journey of self-discovery, which will hopefully guide him in the right direction. He learns that not every path necessarily leads to one’s set destination. He also finally realizes why his grandfather keeps gleefully and incorrectly pronouncing his own “final day”. Set in a place where the sun almost never shines, the film stands out for its humorous, at times even ironic, tone.
This masterful debut of 31-year-old Moscow filmmaker Philipp Yuryev won a directing award at Venice, where it premiered, along with several domestic prizes.
