60-something Jan is weary of life. The last straw comes when his fatherin- law decides to die, having lost his will to live. Realizing that he’s headed towards a similar fate, Jan decides to abandon the beaten path. At first he escapes mentally, withdrawing into himself, then physically, setting out on a journey to fulfil his lifelong dream. Aside from Jan’s quest for freedom, we are also introduced to his two daughters, whose attitudes towards their husbands are diametrically opposed. And the same goes for the quality of their relationships. On his character and the film’s subject matter, Jiří Bartoška says: “Women will marry a tiger, only to turn him into a rabbit; he’ll get his sprinkling of chow, but then the gates slam closed so he doesn’t get any ideas about playing tiger outside of his hutch. And that’s what we try to talk about in our film.” Appropriate for all generations, this funny, intelligent film about rebellion and relationships touches on topics like the search for meaning and happiness and the limits of human freedom.
