Through its portrait of 13-year-old
Dorotka, this documentary presents
the overall issue of the acceptance
of and coexistence with people with
Down syndrome. Aiming to educate
the public, the film poses some
basic questions about its subject
matter, but also functions as an ideal
positive example, teaching viewers
what to expect and how to behave
when they meet people with Down
syndrome in real life. Avoiding the
overly didactic, the filmmakers based
their unforced approach on the
emotionally affecting testimonies of
Dorotka, her family and those around
her. An Extra Something makes
a convincing case that the societal
inclusion of people like Dorotka is
to everyone’s benefit. The film won
the Audience Award at the 2019 Sun
in a Net Awards, the Slovak national
film prize.
