The period known as the Cold War sets the stage for a passionate love story between singer/dancer Zula and pianist Wiktor. They two hardly suit each other, with differences ranging from class to temperament, and yet their love is somehow predestined. Set in the 1950s and 60s and stretching from Poland and Berlin to Yugoslavia and Paris, Cold War is a hopeless odyssey of love in hopeless times. The period depiction of Poland evokes bleak images intimately familiar to those of neighbouring Eastern European countries. In the struggle to get by, the characters have no qualms about taking advantage of any opportunity that presents itself. Even betrayal or mutual bribery in the name of career advancement were accepted practice in those times. But most of all, this is a film about music, about Wiktor and Zula, and about the yearning to find a home in a constantly shifting world. At the 71st Cannes IFF, the film won an award for best director.
