Seoul cab driver Kim Man-seob lives a hand-to-mouth existence, struggling to care for his little daughter. With eviction looming, he hears about a foreigner offering a generous reward for an English-speaking taxi driver to take him to Gwangju and back. In a lucky break for Kim, despite his miserable English, he manages to intercept Peter before the arrival of his agreed-upon driver. Their ensuing journey marks the beginning of a beautiful friendship and ends with recordings of the Gwangju Uprising, which remains one of the most traumatic events in recent Korean memory. The film was based on the memoirs of German reporter Jürgen Hinzpeter dating from May 1980. Korea’s national Oscar nominee, A Taxi Driver also won the Korean Association of Film Critics Award, the Grand Bell Award for Best Film, the Blue Dragon Awards for Best Film, Actor and Music, as well as the same event’s Audience Choice Award.
