Interpreter Ali Ungár happens upon on a book by a former SS officer describing his time as a soldier in Slovakia. At one point, Ungár realizes that the SS man is responsible for the death of his own parents, who lost their lives when he was just a boy. He heads to Vienna to find the murderer, but learns that only his son remains. Georg, a former teacher, has distanced himself from his father his entire life. But the strange, unannounced visit piques his interest, and he decides to find out who his father actually was. Thus begins this road movie into a past that matters deeply to both protagonists, the son of a murderer and the son of his victims. Their harrowing pursuit of the trail of clues leads them into the depths of conscience and guilt. The Interpreter had its world premiere at the 2018 Berlinale and features an illustrious pair in its leading roles: actor/director Jiří Menzel and Peter Simonischek, winner of the 2016 European Film Award for Best Actor. The Slovak Film and Television Academy nominated The Interpreter for the European Film Award in the fiction category.
