The Chinese film Black Dog premiered at the 2024 Cannes IFF, where it won the Un Certain Regard Award. It is a unique combination of western and fairy tale. Its poetics are based on visually striking and artistically composed shots. It tells the dramatic story of a lonely hero in an apocalyptic post-industrial environment who gets into an action-packed conflict with local gangs after befriending a dangerous and wanted dog. The story takes place in the recent past and documents the real transformations of Chinese society during this period – becoming both a memory trace and a metaphor.
Hu Guan won the awards for Best Director and Best Cinematography at the Valladolid IFF.
The Partner of the film: Carmeuse Slovakia, s.r.o.
