Bologna, 2002. Opposition to the Labour Law explodes on university campuses. The murder of a judge reopens old political wounds between Italy and France. Marco is a former left-wing activist convicted of murder and exiled in France for 20 years. Thanks to the Mitterrand doctrine, he is accused of having ordered the attack. The Italian government requests his extradition. “I was six years old and I was watching Toto Cutugno on television. Suddenly, the song was interrupted by a special programme. Aldo Moro, President of the Christian Democracy party, kidnapped 55 days previously by the terrorist group Red Brigade, had been killed. The images of Moro’s corpse buried once and for all the hopes, the songs, the colours of the last generation of Italians to dare to dream. The origin of After the War is the price that my unhappy generation, a collateral victim of a war that was not their own, has had to pay for the mistakes of others,” says the director. The film was screened at the 2017 Cannes IFF in the Un Certain Regard section.
