We’ve got some good news and some not entirely bad news.
This film’s title might remind you of the dark 2005 thriller SPL: Kill Zone,
where the atmosphere and suspense were so thick, you couldn’t even cut them with
a knife. Like the first, SPL II features actors Jacky Wu and Simon Yam and is
produced by Wilson Yip (director of SPL: Kill Zone, Ip Man 1, 2 and 3). But the
second instalment is visibly brighter, and closer to films like The White Storm
(2013, d. Benny Chan). It bravely sets foot where the butterfly effect is a
basic law of physics. Where police honour, family, new friendships and the
common struggle for what’s right are matters of life and death. And where every
battle may be the last. When Kit (Jacky Wu Jing) blows his cover among a gang
of organ traffickers, the young Hong Kong cop is sent to a secret prison in
Thailand. The only one who can help him is prison officer Chai (Tony Jaa). But
first they have to overcome the language barrier. Until then, it’s every man
fighting for himself. And if there’s one thing they know, it’s how to fight.
