Deborah Haywood’s debut is a lovely, funny, faintly delirious film. It sports the trappings of realism, while employing a curious candy-coloured aesthetic. The touching story centres on Lyn and Iona, a lonely and slightly weird mother and daughter who move to a new town. A new town means a new school, which in turn means humiliation and bullying. Those around them refuse to accept their otherness, and so they entangle themselves in all sorts of fantasies and lies. Their exceptionally close relationship becomes its own universe, clashing violently with what regular people consider acceptable. It seems that their multi-coloured fantasy world filled with little kitties isn’t a sufficiently powerful weapon for their battle with the outside world.
