Fifty-something Mikael is a doctor who works the night shift, making house calls to the elderly, the homeless, and the drug-addicted. On call nonstop, he works without respite. Weary, apathetic, fed up and resigned, he can no longer take the pressure from his brother, a pharmacist, to write fake prescriptions for illegal drugs, and he decides to break free from this mad merry-go-round – if he possibly can.
French director Elie Wajeman has crafted an exemplary piece of film noir. The suspenseful, hair-raising narrative is a fascinating plunge into the life of a night-shift doctor, part angel and part demon, whose obsession with his mission of salvation leaves his personal life in ruins. The story is told in an evocative, kaleidoscopic fashion, with interwoven sequences reminiscent of a noose that periodically loosens only to tighten even further. This intimate medical drama features a formidable starring performance from Vincent Macaigne.
