Despite her outward prettiness, on the inside, medical student Dana is a spinsterish wallflower with serious issues. When the object of her affections, an economics student, rejects her, she decides to show him that someone cares about her – she asks her classmate to marry her, and ends up stealing her best friend’s husband. With time, Dana acquires a taste for intrigue, bad-mouthing and manipulating people, managing to exploit their every ounce of weakness, cowardice, and even ordinary human decency. Though it was produced during the previous regime, this psychological drama, with its critical, free-thinking spirit, bore signs of the societal changes to come. At the Days of Czech and Slovak Film, Ivana Chýlková won the award for best actress, while the film was honoured with a Caméra d’Or – Special Mention at Cannes 1990 and tied for best debut at Montreal. In 1998 it was followed by a loose sequel entitled A Time of Debts (Čas dluhů).
