I. J. Kovačević’s cultural film serves as a cinematic counterpart to the traditional patriarchal notion of the "great men of the nation" (Uomini Illustri) who are considered the makers of history. In this film, the "great story" of Slovak history is being written, portraying all the historical figures as (old) Slovaks. In addition to its national narrative, the film also tells the story of Slovakia's modernization, notably excluding the political context of the recently dissolved Czechoslovakia. Despite its nationalistic tone, the film stands out for its remarkable cinematic composition, making it a unique piece of its kind.
