Made in England: The Films of Powell and Pressburger
Director(s): David HintonUK, US, FR133 min.2024

Martin Scorsese tells the story of the brilliant and unconventional British filmmaking duo, Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger (that is, Imre Pressburger), and their body of work. Scorsese first saw the films of Powell and Pressburger on American television as a child and they captured his imagination for a lifetime. In his precise and sensitive analysis, he talks not only about his idols and his personal connection to them, but also reveals how their films influenced him and his entire generation. Rich in archive material, Made in England is one of the most beautiful film history documentaries of the past few years, and is itself film history.

“For me their body of work is a wondrous presence, a constant source of energy and a reminder of what life and art are all about.” Martin Scorsese / The Times, 10 May 2024

31st IFF ART FILM proudly presents this unique film to commemorate 130 years since the birth of cinema.

Orphaned, starving, feral children roam the bombed streets at the end of the Second World War, stealing and looting. They stumble across a ruined yet well provisioned castle that at first sight appears uninhabited, but it does actually have a resident: Péter Simon, the famous conductor disgusted by life. Gradually, step by step, some sense of fellowship, even friendship evolves between the children and the pure-hearted man. Géza Radványi’s film, sprinkled with humour, paints a stark picture of a Hungary devastated by war.

Director(s): Dušan HanákCS101 min.1980

A tragicomedy about an aging bachelor and a poignant portrait of people living on the margins of society. Dušan Hanák’s fourth feature was completed in 1980, but communist censorship delayed its release until late 1988. Hiçbir Şey Normal Değil

A darkly satirical documentary comedy, shot in a circus style, tells the almost unbelievable story of Turkey’s first “eco” entertainment park. The megalomaniacal project of a grandiose resort and its gradual decline into complete disaster became a process. The author records it using a dramaturgically balanced collage of dance and movement performances, archival footage, memories of guests and staff, media reports, and shots of a dinosaur. The complex’s absurd grandiosity captures the struggle of realizing a dream built on political super-kitsch.

This film features intense camera movements and kaleidoscope effects which might cause eye strain, headaches, dizziness, and nausea. Those sensitive to these effects should be aware. Thank you!

Vyšší princip
Director(s): Jiří KrejčíkCS102 min.1960

For 25-year-old Ivan Mistrík, this psychological drama directed by Jiří Krejčík in 1960 marked his tenth feature film. A Higher Principle is now considered one of the most acclaimed works of post-war Czech cinema. Based on a short story of the same name from Jan Drda’s collection The Silent Barricade, the film draws inspiration from real events – and Drda himself also co-wrote the screenplay. Breaking free from the ideological clichés of its time, the story centres on the execution of 16-year-old Antonín Stočes, a grammar school student from Příbram who was arrested and killed during the Heydrich terror for expressing anti-Nazi views. While the film’s emotional core lies in the quiet but resolute moral stand of Latin teacher Málek – brilliantly portrayed by František Smolík – it also paints a nuanced portrait of the varied responses of small-town society under occupation.

The film will be introduced by Juraj Čurný, the spokeman of the festival.

Limonov
Director(s): Kirill SerebrennikovIT, FR, ES138 min.2024

A criminal, poet, servant, politician, revolutionary, warmonger, anarchist, and maniac, Limonov was truly a remarkable figure in the Russian and American underground of his time. He was a major influence – and repeatedly demonstrated which paths were bound to lead nowhere. Kirill Serebrennikov's new film tells Limonov's perverse story at the crazy and colourful pace of a roller coaster at some kind of remarkable fair. It takes the viewer from sheer excitement to utter disgust – and back again. It premiered in the main competition at the 2024 Cannes IFF and shows the strange political and artistic upheavals of the world in the second half of the 20th century.

The film was nominated for a Donatello David for visual effects.

Maria
Director(s): Jessica PaludFR100 min.2024

What does an intimate relationship between a man and a woman look like when they know nothing about each other – not even their names? When they strip away all social roles and what remains is only raw, unfiltered essence? When Last Tango in Paris premiered in 1972, critics hailed director Bernardo Bertolucci’s bold vision and his experimental directing style, which pushed actors to their emotional limits in search of authenticity.

Marlon Brando was praised for his powerful performance and enjoyed another career peak in the lead role. But the story had a darker underside. For Maria Schneider, the young actress who saw the film as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, the experience left lasting scars. While the film became a cinematic milestone, she emerged from it not as a star, but as its most tragic casualty.

During filming, she felt excluded, deceived, humiliated, abused, and even raped by the Bertolucci-Brando duo. For many years, no one knew how Last Tango in Paris had negatively affected her life. The film Being Maria fills this void.

It is clear that nothing is clear…

“I am a fairly decent man, and yet I could say such things about myself that it would have been better if my mother had never given birth to me. I am arrogant, vengeful, honorable; I carry so much evil within me that my reason is not enough to comprehend it all, my imagination not enough to envision it all, and my time not enough to carry it all out. Why should men like me wander between heaven and earth? We are all cunning scoundrels—trust none of us.” (Hamlet)

Hamlet – a modern adaptation of William Shakespeare’s world-renowned drama. The creators place the story of the Danish prince in the near future, offering the audience a perspective of a contemporary medieval era. Denmark is ravaged by constant threats of war, and power struggles tear the state apart and erode its society from within.

Kronika večných snílkov
Director(s): Rastislav BorošSK89 min.2024

Nominated for FIPRESCI Award.

At the edge of the world, where time stands still and even the shadows of ancestors remain loyal to their homes, lies a village where stylized absurdity blends with the nation’s subconscious. Here, reality walks hand in hand with dreams – and the afterlife. This is the setting for RasťoBoroš's new film, which uses its unique visual poetics and grotesque humour to explore sensitive yet still relevant themes in our society.

The grotesque tales of two lazy brothers, adrift in their own naivety and foolishness, unfold somewhere in the hills of central Slovakia. Their story is a metaphor for our deep-rooted archetypes – unchanged for centuries – that define us as a nation, in both the best and worst sense of the word: raw, absurd, and unmistakably authentic.

1944. In Vermiglio, a mountain village high up in the Italian Alps, war looms as a distant but constant threat. The arrival of Pietro, a deserted soldier, disrupts the dynamics of the local teacher’s family, changing them forever. During the four seasons marking the end of World War II, Pietro and Lucia, the eldest daughter of the teacher, are instantly drawn to each other leading to an unexpected fate. As the world emerges from tragedy, the family will face its own. Vermiglio, the second film of Maura Delpero premiered at Venice Film Festival in 2024, where it received the Grand Jury Prize.

“My father left us on a hot summer afternoon... In the following months he came to visit me in a dream. (…) Vermiglio is a landscape of the soul, a "Family Lexicon" that lives inside me, on the threshold of the unconscious, an act of love for my father, his family and their small town. Crossing a personal period, it wants to pay homage to a collective memory.” Maura Delpero

Saint-Ex
Director(s): Pablo AgüeroFR98 min.2024

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry might never have become a writer – let alone the author of The Little Prince – if he hadn’t faced a life-or-death moment in the icy Andes. Long before his literary fame, he worked as an airmail pilot in Argentina, flying alongside his close friend and fellow pilot Henri Guillaumet. Their mission was simple but perilous: deliver letters as quickly as possible, even if it meant navigating deadly mountain routes. In 1930, Henri’s plane went down in the Andes, and he was presumed lost. Refusing to give up, Antoine drew on all his courage, imagination, and capacity for hope to search for and help rescue his friend. That harrowing experience shaped his worldview – and later, his writing.

This powerful story is brought to life in Saint-Exupéry, a film by Argentine-born French director Pablo Agüero. Raised in a slum with no running water or reliable food, Agüero dreamed of making films – and went on to debut at Cannes. Today, he directs stars like Louis Garrel, Vincent Cassel, and Diane Kruger, proving that imagination and resilience can take you anywhere.
