Aftersun is set in a Turkish seaside resort in the 1990s. Here, a divorced young father Calum is on a holiday with his eleven-year-old daughter Sophia. However, the easy-going demeanour of the father, who doesn’t spoil any fun and is amused by the fact that others see him as Sophie’s older brother, is obscured by a disturbing veil of melancholy. Charlotte Well’s debut was one of the most pleasant surprises of last year’s Cannes Film Festival. It has a touch of a childhood memory and needs no ostentatious gestures to capture the indescribable intensity of life’s feeling. Suprisingly fresh and inspiring direction, great performances.
Paul Mescal was nominated for Academy Awards and BAFTA for Best Actor in a Leading Role and nominated for a European Film Award.
