Student uprisings and a military coup form the historical background to a suffocating family chronicle marked by psychological trauma, violence, and a guilt complex. An impending sense of doom permeates monochromatic shots of desolate, deserted towns, creating an eerie shadow theatre. The dark soundtrack, minimal action, and slow pace evoke a hypnotic state. The characters seem trapped in an emotional paralysis in which the past and present merge into an endless nightmare. But in the end, the sun crosses the shadows: is this a sign or symbol of a potential change?
Taiki Sakpisito's feature debut The Edge of Daybreak won the FIPRESCI Award at the Rotterdam IFF.
