Sergei Loznitsa is one of the most respected and appreciated documentary directors, adopting various aesthetic and formal approaches with both observational and staged films. He’s often worked with archival cut-up documentaries, such as The Kiev Trial. By using unique, previously unknown archival footage, Loznitsa reconstructs the January 1946 trial in Kiev, recreating its atmosphere. It was one of the first post-war trials of Nazis where the accused faced charges of crimes against humanity. The film masterfully shows the "banality of evil" and sadly remains chillingly relevant.
