Ján Kavka, a paramedic, becomes an indirect witness to the violent murder of his wife at the time of their separation. He becomes a widower who lives with the knowledge that he indirectly caused his wife's death and did not come to help her at a critical moment. He finds refuge from the insistent guilt thanks to his friend Michal at the local boxing club. However, the inability of the police to convict the perpetrator of the crime forces him to take law into his own hands. Shadowplay does not offer a simplistic and one-sided view of the protagonists and their motivations: the police officials act in good faith, but the divergent interests of the investigators from different departments create room for mistakes, while the protagonist does not seek revenge in justice, but rather redemption. Above all, the film raises an important question about the possibility of coming to terms with trauma and finding forgiveness towards oneself.
