Orphaned, starving, feral children roam the bombed streets at the end of the Second World War, stealing and looting. They stumble across a ruined yet well provisioned castle that at first sight appears uninhabited, but it does actually have a resident: Péter Simon, the famous conductor disgusted by life. Gradually, step by step, some sense of fellowship, even friendship evolves between the children and the pure-hearted man. Géza Radványi’s film, sprinkled with humour, paints a stark picture of a Hungary devastated by war.
The Quest is a visually stunning Hungarian animated feature based on Mihály Vörösmarty’s 19th-century dramatic poem, titled Csongor és Tünde. Along the way, they encounter various characters who challenge Csongor’s views on life and love. However, an evil force, Mirigy, threatens to derail both Csongor’s journey and his faith in true love. Blending Hungarian folklore with captivating animation, the film is inspired by the legendary Attila Dargay, a key figure in Hungarian animation known for his imaginative storytelling and groundbreaking style. With its timeless themes, breathtaking animation, and a powerful message about love and perseverance, The Quest is poised to captivate audiences worldwide.

Martin Scorsese tells the story of the brilliant and unconventional British filmmaking duo, Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger (that is, Imre Pressburger), and their body of work. Scorsese first saw the films of Powell and Pressburger on American television as a child and they captured his imagination for a lifetime. In his precise and sensitive analysis, he talks not only about his idols and his personal connection to them, but also reveals how their films influenced him and his entire generation. Rich in archive material, Made in England is one of the most beautiful film history documentaries of the past few years, and is itself film history.
“For me their body of work is a wondrous presence, a constant source of energy and a reminder of what life and art are all about.” Martin Scorsese / The Times, 10 May 2024

A minimalist observational documentary with long static shots. It offers a fascinating, almost meditative reflection on the many ways we try to eliminate dirt, dust, impurity, and disorder from our lives and surroundings. The associative montage creates a strange world of images of (mental) hygiene, sacred rituals and stereotypes, decontamination in the army and cleaning ladies in churches... The camera allows us to see what our unfocused eyes simply cannot notice, even though it is all around us: constant cleaning and polishing in the name of keeping the world as we know it and as we are accustomed to it.
The film was partially shot in Slovakia.

The story of the Fülöp brothers begins in 1999, when Levante, barely ten years old, is sent into military service. His parents are alcoholics. His seven siblings have already been placed in a children’s home. Life has dealt him the same harsh, inescapable fate as his brother Csaba. They become servants, working in the fields and on farms. They attend school only briefly – just enough to learn a bit of reading and writing. Levante speaks of his dreams: going to school, getting good grades, maybe saving up to buy a horse. As an adult, he watches his siblings lead much happier lives. But he and Csaba fall into alcoholism, trapped in the same cycle, unable to fight this addiction. Now a shepherd in the mountain pastures, Levante reflects on everything that could have been – but never was. This slow-paced documentary follows his journey into adulthood. Set in Transylvania, in Romania’s Szeklerland region – home to the Hungarian minority.
The film In the Summer won the Grand Jury Prize for Best Feature Film and the U.S. Dramatic Grand Jury Prize at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. It is an authentically portrayed, consistently realistic contemporary story, told across several time periods. The natural performances and focus on realism evoke strong empathy in viewers, who experience the upheavals of a troubled father-daughter relationship unfolding through changing times together with the characters. Alessandra Lacorazza's new film is a brilliant example and showcase of the American independent school/style, which is characterized by extraordinary accuracy in depicting reality, an emphasis on psychological detail, and a powerful statement about our everyday lives.

Beautiful Gangu comes from a good family and dreams of becoming an actress. Her lover Ramnik promises her that his aunt will prepare her for her dream career, so she runs away with him, but he sells her to a brothel from which there is no return. Ganga quickly realizes the harsh reality of her situation – and outwardly submits. But beneath the surface, she remains fearless, knowing her only chance is to fight back. She finds protection in a powerful ally who draws her into the illegal alcohol trade. With sharp wit and bold strategy, Ganga eliminates her rivals one by one. In a striking act of defiance, she sets up a street screening of a film at the exact moment her political opponent is delivering an election speech, drawing the crowd away.
